Vacheron Constantin History

Vacheron Constantin, founded in 1755 by the 24-year-old master watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron in Geneva, is the world's oldest watch manufacturer in continuous operation. The brand has maintained its dedication to craftsmanship and innovation for over 265 years, weathering significant historical events such as wars, revolutions, and the Quartz Crisis.

Vacheron’s initial focus on high-quality pocket watches laid the foundation for a legacy of precision and excellence. In 1819, the company underwent a pivotal transformation when Jean-Marc’s grandson, Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron, partnered with businessman François Constantin. This partnership gave rise to the name Vacheron et Constantin and introduced the enduring motto: "Do better if possible, and that is always possible."

In the 1950s, Vacheron Constantin introduced the ultra-thin Calibre 1003 movement, which became a hallmark of its refined designs. By the 1970s, the brand released the 222 model, a luxury steel sports watch, designed by Gérald Genta. The 222 later evolved into the popular Overseas collection, now in its third generation.

In 1880, Vacheron Constantin adopted the iconic Maltese Cross logo, symbolizing their quest for precision. By 1901, the brand's watches were awarded the prestigious Geneva Seal, a mark of quality and authenticity.

Recent innovations include the Tour de l’Île wristwatch, launched for the 250th anniversary in 2005, and the 2015 release of the Reference 57260 pocket watch, the most complicated timepiece in the world with 57 functions. Today, Vacheron Constantin continues to honor its heritage while pushing the boundaries of horological innovation.
